Cathal Carolan is an Irish photographer whose work explores the relationship between people and place through observation, composition, and visual rhythm. Drawn to quiet moments and the subtleties of everyday life, his images reflect a sensitivity to how people move through and shape the spaces around them.
His photography has been exhibited internationally, from Asia to Europe. After several years living in Japan, Cathal’s work gained wider recognition in Tokyo, where he joined the Tokyo Streets collective and participated in their inaugural exhibition in Shibuya alongside some of the city’s leading street photographers. Living between the stillness of rural Japan and the intensity of Tokyo has left a lasting influence on his approach.
Since returning to Ireland in 2024, he has been actively exhibiting across galleries and publications. Recent highlights include Culture Night as part of Drogheda’s Night Moves programme, a major solo exhibition at The Kiosk (Droichead Arts Centre), and selection for the 195th Annual Exhibition at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin, where his work was named by The Irish Times as one of “12 must-see artworks” from the show. His work most recently featured on the front cover of Goblin magazine’s latest issue, Róidín.
